Bio

Newly contracted Hurricane Beauden Barrett is following in his father’s footsteps by joining the Hurricanes. Beauden’s father Kevin made 15 appearances for the franchise in 1997 and 1998. Kevin also played 167 first-class matches for Taranaki, so rugby runs strong in the family.

Beauden Barrett was a Hurricanes Wider Squad Member in 2011, after an excellent debut season for Taranaki in 2010 where he displaced former Hurricanes and now Western Force first five-eighth Willie Ripia by the end of that year’s ITM Cup.

He was called up by the Hurricanes before the side's 2011 tour to South Africa where he saw time off the bench, earning his first four Hurricanes caps. He made his debut in an extraordinary 50-47 win over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, a match that saw the Hurricanes prevail on fulltime with a try to lock Jeremy Thrush that Barrett converted.

Then teenager Barrett had already burst on to the international rugby scene when he was selected in the New Zealand Sevens team for the final two legs of the 2010 IRB World Series in England and Scotland, making his international rugby debut at Twickenham. Previously, he had been named by coach Gordon Tietjens as one of 16 contracted players to prepare for February 2010’s Wellington Sevens following an eye catching national tournament for Taranaki in Queenstown.

Barrett played fullback for the New Zealand U20 side that defended its World U20 championship crown in Italy in 2011 - scoring the winning try in the 33-22 victory over England in the final.

Returning to Taranaki for the 2011 ITM Cup, Barrett kicked 29 points – including an ITM Cup record nine penalties – in a 39-33 win over Bay of Plenty. With Barrett playing a leading role, Taranaki finished third in the ITM Cup and lifted the Ranfurly Shield off Southland. Barrett was named Taranaki Back of the Year.

He has joined the Hurricanes for the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
